Wanted - Books by Maine Authors

Heritage Books & Maps is looking for local authors!

Give us a call… we’d love to talk to you!

Shop Window 2

********************************

Condition:  Most of our books are in “good” to “very good” condition; some are “like new” or “excellent”, and a few are “fair”.  Generally our first editions have seen some definite love and handling, although quite a few are looking darned fine for their age!

Prices:  We try to keep our prices competitive with what you’d find on-line.  Therefore, if a book is a dollar or so on Amazon, plus $3.99 shipping & handling, you’ll pay around $3.95 with us.  What a deal… The book is right in front of you and you can see exactly what you’re getting!

Please note, we do not artificially inflate our prices, then give discounts to people who ask for one.  Our prices are our prices, unless we happen to have a sale going on.  Thanks for understanding!

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

Payment Information:   Please see our “Details: Payment & Pricing” page.

Shipping & Delivery Information:  Please see our “Details: Shipping & Delivery” page.

Hours:  Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera is generally open Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  However, we may also be open at other times, and if Heritage Collectibles is open and not busy, we’d be glad to open up the bookstore for you!

Heritage Books & Maps: Contemporary Hardcover Fiction Just $1.95!

 Green Dot

Fiction 2 Fiction 1 Fiction 4 Fiction 3

As we’ve been buying books for Heritage Books, we’ve ended up with several shelves of contemporary hardcover fiction.  Although we have great respect for fiction writers (ha! especially SCIENCE fiction writers!), our interests lie more in the non-fiction arena.  We suspect most of our customers will feel the same.

So we’d just as soon sell our collection of contemporary hardcover fiction inexpensively, to make room for the history & politics, architecture, art, social sciences, travel & gardening, cookbooks and first editions that we’re far more interested in.

Therefore, all of our hardcover contemporary fiction is on sale for $1.95 each.  Buy 4 and get a 5th book free!

Condition:
Most of our contemporary hardcover fiction is in “like new” or “excellent” condition, although some of the books smell a little musty, apparently from poor storage prior to our taking possession of them.

Price:  All of our contemporary hardcover fiction is currently just $1.95; with Maine state sales tax of 11c added, that means each book is just $2.06.

A Little Bit of Room to Breathe!

Whew!  This morning we delivered two vintage cushioned rocking chairs (one with matching hassock), a baker’s rack & assorted other purchases to a local customer.  In the middle of the shop, an antique music cabinet and an antique green dresser are waiting for customers to pick them up.

As soon as another out-of-state customer picks up the four piece wicker set she’s already paid for that she plans to put into her new camp, and yet another grabs her desk & mirror (also already paid for), we may have some space to move around in here!

Although of course that means I’ll just buy more & fill the place to the rafters again….

Come on in and buy stuff, so I’ll have an excuse to hit the auctions again!

Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera

 2016 02 07 - Seating 2016 02 07 - Bookcases

As you can see, our books & maps collection is taking on a life of its own!

We’ve collected so many wonderful old books (including many first editions) and contemporary ones (with loads of kids books and cookbooks), as well as framed & unframed topographical maps, that we have to set up their own little shop.

Watch for Heritage Books & Maps to open in its own location at 5 Park Street in Lewiston… definitely by March 1st, 2016, but perhaps even sooner.  The pictures above show the shop’s transformation in progress… we have boxes and boxes of books to add to our shelves (and inventory from Papa’s Thrift Shop to remove and consolidate with Heritage Collectibles, which is right around the corner).

Here are a few of the vintage books we have in stock:

Emily Post’s Etiquette
Three Loves, by A J Cronin
The Long Patrol, by H A Cody
The Crisis, by Winston Churchill
The House of the Seven Gables, by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Thankful’s Inheritance, by Joseph C Lincoln
Tom Swift & His Ocean Airport, by Victor Appleton
The Good Earth, by Pearl S Buck
A Daughter of the Sioux, by General Charles King
Fairy Tales, by Hans Anderson (yes, this edition is old enough that he went without the “Christian” in his name!)
The Re-Creation of Brian Kent, by Harold Bell Wright
Tall Stories, by Lowell Thomas
Woman and the New Race, by Margaret Sanger

We have hundreds more, including loads of cookbooks and childrens’ books.

We have topographical maps including some lovely framed ones, and we have vintage vinyl, too!  Check back in soon for more information!

As of right now it looks like Heritage Books & Maps hours will be:

  • Sundays, 12:00n-4:00p
  • Mondays, closed
  • Tuesdays, 6:00p-7:30p
  • Wednesdays, 6:00p-7:30p
  • Thursdays, closed

ISO (in search of) Donated Hay for Non-Profit Helping Feral Cats

 Bale of Hay

Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends is a non-profit that’s long been dedicated to helping feral cat colonies here in Androscoggin County.  Norm and Rose work tirelessly, endlessly, every single day to provide food, shelter and medical assistance to hundreds of feral and semi-feral cats.

Right now they need bales of hay for shelter for the cats.

Here’s Norm’s most recent communication, as posted on Facebook:

Friends I would appreciate any help you can give me whether by sharing or providing information. Thanks, Norm

HELP!!!!! Its been brutally cold as many of you know and many of our babies in recovery care and the colonies needs your help to keep warm. I’ve called numerous people and left messages with no returrned calls and have tried calling many other places that were unable to help.

I need HAY. At least 10 bales. I don’t expect it for nothing and willing to pay. All I am hoping for is to keep our babies safe, warm, and comfortable.

I too am a difficult man to reach, because I am so busy working in the colonies, as well as doing so many other things for our babies. If you can help by giving me information where I can get hay I would greatly appreciate this.

Please send me all information to my email normblais39@yahoo.com

Thanks, Norm

Although Norm says he’s willing to pay, his non-profit is run on a shoestring (they often fund-raise through bottle drives and bake sales); he could really use the donation if at all possible.

If you have hay to donate (or sell), please let Norm know.  It’s possible I could come pick some up, although my schedule is already overextended between my full-time social work job and our arts & antique shop, as well as our thrift shop.  However, if there’s no other way of getting the hay to Norm, I will do what I can.

You can learn more about Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends and the amazing work they do by checking out their website at http://tommysferalfelinefriends.com.

Thanks!
Linda

*****************************************

Hours:  In January 2016 we expect to be open as follows (although there will be changes here and there, based on our jobs or work on various non-profit boards).

Mondays – 10:00-2:00
Tuesdays – 10:00-2:00
Wednesdays  closed
Thursdays – 10:00-2:00
Fridays – 10:00-5:00
Saturdays – 11:00-5:00
Sundays – 1:30-4:30
We can also be open by appointment if necessary, which would usually have to be early in the morning (any time after 6:00 a.m.!).  Our full-time “day” jobs often keep us out until 8:30 or so at night, so evening appointments can be difficult.

If you’re traveling any distance please place a quick call or text to Linda ahead of time at 207 740 2247 to confirm that the shop will be open, as her social work job sometimes necessitates last minute scheduling changes, and that can happen even on weekends.

Payment:  We aren’t currently set up to accept credit or debit cards, but hope to have that taken care of soon.  In the meantime, we’ll take good old US currency, checks (include your driver’s license and phone numbers, please), and PayPal.
Please Note:  If you have a PayPal account but don’t know how to use it to pay for an item, we will walk you through it.   We’ve also just learned of scams being perpetrated via PayPal, as reported in our blog: https://heritagecollectiblesmaine.com/2016/01/02/pay-pal-scams-on-craigslist-from-another-blogger/

Pricing Information:

Please understand that unlike some shops we do not artificially inflate our prices and then give discounts to people who ask for them.  Our prices are firm (although we may on occasion have a sale on certain items, but those would be announced).

Shipping:

Most items can be shipped via USPS, UPS or FedEx.

We don’t recommend shipping larger or heavier items, as the price can be prohibitive, although if you want it and are willing to pay whatever the shipping company will charge, we’ll make it happen.

Alternatively, we can arrange delivery within 350 miles at the rate of $.79 per mile round trip plus any applicable tolls.  There’s a $25 minimum charge for delivery less than 16 miles in one direction (32 miles round trip).
Multiple purchases to the same address can be combined into one delivery for a single delivery price, as long as everything can fit into our Jeep Liberty.  If we must rent a cargo van or larger truck, the delivery price increases to reflect our additional costs.
Also, if a 2nd delivery person must be added (for example, because no one on your end is available to help unload furniture requiring two people), there’s an additional $.49 per mile round trip cost.

All shipping & delivery charges must be paid for in advance.  Sorry, no CODs.

Message re Our Products
:
Most of the items we offer are vintage, antique or simply pre-owned.  Therefore, reasonable wear & tear is to be expected, and our items are sold as seen and as described in the photos and/or in person.
We try to describe any damage, nicks, blemishes or other problems of which we are aware in any and all of our listings, and always include plenty of clear photographs which are integral to the description, so please review them closely.
Also, please be aware that vintage and antique items are unlikely to be in factory condition, so if you aren’t used to buying antique or vintage items – and are in fact looking for a pristine, unused item – a new reproduction may be better suited for you.
We ordinarily do not “clean up” items because such cleaning may detract from their value.
We are specific and honest in our descriptions because we want happy buyers who will return and/or refer their friends!

SOLD! August 2016 Sale! Very Nice 6-Foot Double Pedestal Dining Room Table – Was $125; Now Just $62.50!

This double pedestal dining room table is in very good condition, with just a couple of flaws, which you can see in the pictures below.  There are a few dings on one side of the table (as seen by the white marks), and then a much larger and more obvious one on the other side, which could easily be covered with a placemat.  If you were to have the table refinished, it would be absolutely beautiful.  Even now, it’s very nice.

The table comes with two leaves, both of which are in excellent condition.

As you can see, we don’t have very good pictures of the table, mostly because we don’t have room in the shop to set it up properly, so the top, the leaves and the pedestal legs are all separated.  However it only takes four screws for each pedestal leg to put the table back together, and it’s a whole lot easier to transport this way anyway.  (We took it apart to move it from the auction house to the shop.)
Dining Table, double pedestal leg, 2 Dining Table, Top

Dimensions:

  • Table: 44″W x 72″ L x 32″H
  • Leaves: 20″W each, making the table over 9 feet long when fully extended.

Condition:  Very Good. There are some flaws in the table as shown in the pictures.

Price:  Was $125.00; now (August only) just $62.50!  Don’t forget, a 5.5% Maine sales tax applies.

Note: we have two sets of four dining chairs, each of which could go with this table.  The chairs are ordinarily $95 for a set of four.  If purchased with the table during our August sale, the combined price for the table and 4 chairs would be $137.50 – for a savings of $82.50 (plus Maine sales tax of course).  We’ve included a few pictures of the two sets of chairs to give you an idea of what they look like.

SOLD! Chamber Pots in Pristine Condition – We Have ‘Em!

159

From Wikipedia:  “A chamber pot (also a jordan,[1][2] a jerry, a guzunder, a po (possibly from French: pot de chambre), a piss pot, a potty, or a thunder pot) is a bowl-shaped container with a handle, and often a lid, kept in the bedroom under a bed or in the cabinet of a nightstand and generally used as a toilet at night. In Victorian times, some chamber pots would be built into a cabinet with a closeable cover.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamber_pot

Well, whatever you want to call them (and I’m now partial to the term “thunder pot”), our chamber pots are quite pretty and I doubt they’ve ever been used for anything other than decoration!  (We only have 3 left.)

As noted in our blog “Chamber Pot Commode (or Toilet Cabinet)“, these would look great grouped around a toilet cabinet you’ve refurbished, with asparagus fern fronds providing a lovely green contrast.

Condition:  Each piece is in very good to excellent condition.

Price:  Sale!  $15.00 each (were $18.00), two for $27.00 or all three for $36.00!  Maine sales tax of 5.5% added.

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

Payment Information:   Please see our “Details: Payment & Pricing” page.

SOLD! Vintage Hand-Crafted Chess Set

 139

This hand-made chess set is truly unique… we doubt you’ll ever find another like it!

The chess board itself is the wooden box that all the pieces fit into.  Each square is about 3″ x 3″, and inlaid into the hand made wooden box; when the box is closed, the chessboard makes up the outside of the box.

The chess pieces are hand-carved of two types of wood, with the darker ones being the “black” pieces and the lighter ones the “white” pieces.   Each piece is at least 6″ tall, with the kings and queens nearly a foot high.

When the box is closed with all the pieces inside, it is far heavier than you might expect.

Condition:   Overall, the set is in very good condition although some of the glue has dried out, and the tops of the rooks and a couple of other pieces come off.  (Those pieces were made in two parts and glued together, not carved as a single piece.)

Dimensions:  The exact dimensions will have to be posted later, but my estimate is that open, the chessboard is about 30″ x 36″ and about 4″ high.  The pieces themselves range in height from about 6″-10″.

Price:  $195.00.  5.5% Maine sales tax applies.
