Yet Another Stupid Scam via Craigslist

Another scam via Craigslist.  This came in to my email, with a return address saying it was a “craigslist reply 640e).    Two minutes earlier I’d gotten an identical one, only referencing a different item.

Both emails referenced a supposed earlier email.

“Did u message my Boss concerning your post?
On Wed, Aug 23, 2017 at 11:13 AM, craigslist reply cb6b wrote:
Can you message Ben right away on msczca at gmail .he his more than ready to purchase your Soil Survey — Penobscot County Maine.can you meet today anytime.please let him know where you decide and what your bottom price is.please email works better because he works on a plant.

Thanks Alicia,”

It’s not unusual for scammers to text you, with the direction to email them back because “they’re at work and can’t get texts” or they’ve “borrowed someone’s phone” or they’re “texting for someone who’s too busy” to do it themselves.

It’s all horsepuckey.  Don’t respond.  Just forward the emails to craigslist as a scam, and delete all texts and emails without further comment.

Be safe!

SOLD! Must Have, One of a Kind, Folk Art – A Vintage Painted Outhouse Seat!

I don’t even want to count the number of times I had to use the outhouses at my grandparents while growing up.  And we certainly didn’t have anything like this to sit on!

This has to be a one of a kind piece; I’ve never seen one like it and I’ve been around the block a few times.

Complete with wire hanger on the back.

Please scroll down for more photos.

Condition:  It’s in great condition, considering…..

Location:  This folk art seat / wall hanging can be found at our main location in Lewiston.

Prices:   $35.00   (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

SOLD! Antique Child’s Rolltop Desk

About a year ago we sold a similar child’s roll top desk, but it wasn’t in as good condition as this one is.

The roll top works well with only slight sticking, and the drawer slides smoothly.

Please scroll down for more photos.

Condition:  Very good.  Apparently someone of short stature (e.g. a child) put a couple of stickers on the desk.  The stickers themselves have been removed but there’s still some paper adhered to the wood.  I’ll remove that paper during the clean up/dusting off process.

Price:   $70.00  (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

Location:  Currently at our 189 Main Street in Lewiston shop, but it will be moved to our booth at the Hathaway Mill Antiques Mall, 10 Water Street in Waterville soon.

Please note: The shop will be closed from September 1-25 while Linda visits her daughter and son-in-law for the birth of her first biological grandchild!  Prices on many items are being reduced prior to that time (although not this item, which is being offered for the first time), to help get the shop cleared and organized, and ready for new inventory when Linda returns – in time for the holiday season.

Some Quick Details:

  • Prices Are Firm.  We do not negotiate on the prices listed in our blogs… they’re set based on what the item cost us and our expenses in running the shop.
  • Sales. We do occasionally have sales or reduce the prices on an item (usually if the item has been in the shop for at least 6 months with plenty of marketing).  If so, that reduced price will be posted.
  • Holding Items.  Sorry, not without payment.  We used to when we first opened the shops, and found that too often the person asking us to hold an item never came back and we lost sales in the interim to someone who was standing there with cash in hand. Obviously, that’s not good business.
  • Questions.  This is tough… I’d like to be responsive to everyone who has questions, but I work full time as a social worker, and full time at this shop hoping that someday it will make enough money so I can retire from that social work job.  This means I have very limited time to respond to questions, especially if those questions have already been answered in this blog or on our various posts.  So I may not have time to respond…

SOLD! Box of Miscellaneous Cameras and Camera Supplies

We acquired this box of older cameras and accessories during a recent clean out.  My husband knew something about cameras, but I haven’t a clue.  I’m pretty sure they aren’t that old.  I also think there’s another box with a few camera-related items kicking around in storage somewhere.  If I can find it, I’ll add those pieces to this box as well.

Condition:   Unknown.

Location:  The box of cameras can be found at the Undercover Antique Mall in Oxford.  We’re booth number 56.

Price:  REDUCED!  Now just $10.00 for the entire lot. Was $50.00… seems reasonable to me!  (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

NOTE: Now that we’ve downsized at our main location, our new entrance is at the back of the building (use the rear entrance in back of 189 Main Street, off the Park Street side).  You’ll see some signs in the windows saying “Heritage Collectibles”, “Retail Shop” and “Welcome”!  And if we’re in, the “Open” flag will be up!

SOLD! Home Decorators Bookshelf – Still in Unopened Box

We picked up this 3-shelf Home Decorators bookcase (Kelman series) still inside its unopened box at a recent auction.  Amazon has it listed for $59.99; it’s on eBay for $75.00. Apparently the retail price is over $100.00.

Assembly required.

Dimensions (once assembled):  According to the sketch on the box, it’s 48″W x 36″H.

Location:  This item can be found at the Undercover Antique Mall in Oxford.  We’re booth number 56.

Price:  $40.00…  That’s a HUGE savings!  (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

SOLD! Restaurant Booth Dividers? Not Sure What These Are But They Are Wonderful!!

We love these wrought iron dividers, although frankly we aren’t certain what they were used for.  Our best guess is that they were dividers in a restaurant, attached to the backs of booths.  We only have a few (4) left, and they are of differing sizes of between about 3-4 feet long, but for someone who loves classic elegance, these can’t be beat.

Each has a single leg or base in the middle.

I’m thinking they’d be great as dividers in flower beds.

Dimensions:  About 3-4 feet long (differing sizes). The base is about 2″; the overall height is about 9″.

Condition:   Very good.

Location:  These items can be found at the Den of Antiquities in Westbrook, booth #56.

Price:   $30.00 each or $95.00 for all four .

DONATED! New Bathroom Vanity – Super Inexpensive!

I picked this vanity up off craigslist to use in my own home but neglected to get the dimensions ahead of time – and it’s too small.  Luckily, I’m not out much money (although I did have to travel to get it), so can pass it on to some lucky homeowner, contractor or property manager for pretty darn cheap.  (Besides, it’s taking up too much room in the shop!)

Condition:  Very Good… It’s a nice looking piece.  It does have a few minor dings but otherwise seems in good shape.  And although there are pegs on the inside walls, it didn’t come with a shelf.

Dimensions:  41″W x 24″D x 32″H

Location:  This item can be found at the Undercover Antique Mall in Oxford.  We’re booth number 56.

Price:  $20.00… seems reasonable to me!  (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

SOLD! Antique Telephone or Gossip Bench

This is a nice little gossip bench, reminiscent of the old days when we all had “party lines”.  When we lived in Bryant Pond, my family had the old-fashioned crank (or “ringie-dingie”) phone, that was attached to the wall.  Mom would pick up the receiver and ask the operator to connect her to whomever she wanted to speak… often the operator would tell her that so and so had gone to “Loyston” (Lewiston) for the day but another friend was home.  (Seriously…)

After moving to Bethel, we got updated to the newer dial phone, with a party line that included three other families.  So Mom would pick up the receiver and check to see if anyone else was using the line.  She could even join in the conversation if she wanted!

This gossip bench was of course suitable for gossiping using either telephone type.

Condition:   Good to Very Good.  I had to replace a wingnut on one of the legs… all four were attached when I picked this up at an auction, but by the time I got it home a wingnut had gone missing, so a leg fell off.  An easy fix, for $1.18 plus tax.

It could use some refinishing, but is also perfectly serviceable as is.

Price:   $30.00.   (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

SOLD! Mid Century Modern Elgin Starburst Atomic Clock!

We are wicked excited to offer this Vintage Elgin Atomic Sunburst (or Starburst) Mid Century Modern clock!  Oh, how I love this piece!

I’ve personally wanted one of these for years, but my house is already full to the brim with “stuff” – and besides, as John and I repeatedly told each other, if we bought everything from the shop that we love and took it home, we’d have to have a 10,000 square foot house … and an income to match!

Mid Century Modern is HOT right now, and this is a classic.  Just ten years ago, this clock was selling for maybe $100…  Well, I definitely paid more than that to outbid two others at a local auction!  In the past year, the value of Elgin Starbursts has climbed to as much as $500.00, although $300.00-$350.00 seems about average.

Dimensions:  It’s big! A full 30″ from top to bottom.

Condition:   Very Good to Excellent!  It does have some tarnish which is not unusual.  The battery mechanism may have been replaced (it seems newer than one would expect) although I am no expert on those.  I do know the clock has been keeping perfect time since I replaced the battery 48 hours ago.

Price:   $275.00.   (Plus the usual 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.)

Location:  This fabulous clock can be found at our booth (#56) at the Den of Antiquities, 1399 Bridgton Road in Westbrook, ME.

*****************************

In memory of my beloved husband John K Snyder… 20 Sept 1956 – 21 Oct 2016.
He loved our shops, especially the section we called Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera – that was his baby.

He loved me like crazy, and oh how I loved him.

Follow our blog at https://warrior-project.org, in honor of my husband, and all others who have been lost to internal demons that in the end, overwhelmed them.

All of the profits after expenses from Heritage Collectibles, Books & Maps will go to help fund The (Grief) Warrior Project, a suicide prevention drop-in and counseling center in the process of being developed.

[Please Note: The (Grief) Warrior Project is in no way intended to be reflective of, or piggy back off, Wounded Warriors which serves those military personnel wounded after September 11, 20o1.  Like too many others, John was a warrior long before then.]
