Icelandic Lava Sculpture of Gnomes (or are they trolls?) – From Our Wild Heart Gallery

Wow… take a look at this amazing carving of gnomes or trolls – I’m not sure which!

According to the auctioneer, this is Icelandic lava sculpture but he had no further information regarding the piece.

So all I know is that it’s about 18″H x 24″W, and as much as 3.5″ D in places.  (That’s an eyeball estimate; I haven’t actually measured it… the past few weeks have been wicked busy between this business and my other – primary – business!)

I tried researching using every search term I could think of, with no luck, and I couldn’t find anything even remotely similar on Worthpoint, eBay or any other site.

But wow!  Just look at the detail!

Icelandic folklore is heavy into trolls and gnomes, and I had thought that perhaps these were gnomes.  However, when I posted a plea for information on Facebook, a friend says they are trolls (bad guys!)… which kind of shows in their facial expressions, right?

Anyway, the piece is very heavy yet probably fragile on the surface.

I love love love it and would love to see it go to someone who is as fascinated by folklore as I am.

Note: Items in our Wild Heart Gallery will soon also be published on their own website, Wild Heart dot Gallery.

Condition:   Very good

Dimensions:   about 18″H x 24″ W x 3.5″ D (eyeballed, as noted above)

Price:  $245.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $13.48 for a total of $258.48.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:
Shipping this item is not recommended because it is extremely heavy for its size but we’re also concerned that the surface may be fragile.  This is too cool an item to take chances with, and we would far rather transport it ourselves.  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn for a $15.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $15.00.

For other options, please review our most recent blog on Possible Delivery Options in the Next Week (use the search feature), or our Shipping & Delivery page at https://heritagecollectiblesmaine.com/details-shipping-information/.

Buying Details:  We are very low tech.  Payment can be made via PayPal, good check (please allow 1 week to clear if not known to us) or cash.

Such a Wonderful Brass Owl

Who doesn’t love owls? They are such beautiful and enigmatic creatures! This guy has an 8″ chain that would allow him to hang from your ceiling or a fixture, adding a touch of forest magic to any room.

Condition:   It’s in excellent condition but of course does have some oxidation (greenish discoloration) due to its age.  Apparently this may have been intended to hold a small candle, but the piece the candle would sit on under the owl has gone missing. It’s possible that it’s among some other items boxed up somewhere in the office.  If found, I’ll delete this section of the post.

Dimensions:   5″W x 4″H, plus an 8″ chain.

Price:  $24.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $1.20 for a total of $25.20. Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn for a $15.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $15.00.   Or we can ship via USPS for $10.00.

Vintage Cast Iron Trivet

Old trivets have soooo many uses! But the most important of course, is to keep your old cast iron pots – or new Le Creuset or whatever your preference is – from leaving scorch or burn marks on your counter or table!

Dance to the Song of Life

I love this saying, and that was before I read that it’s a quote attributable to Katherine Hepburn, who was one of my favorite actresses. (I was certain it’s a line from a Cole Porter song, but can’t find it listed anywhere.)

Either way, it’s a wonderful piece.

Condition:   Excellent; like new.

Dimensions:   16″W x 16″H x 2″D

Sold! 1950s Wood Carving of Elderly Haitian Woman with Vegetable Basket

This original wood carving bears F Simeon’s signature underneath. F Simeon was a well-known artist, often depicting Haitian figures, especially women carrying baskets of vegetables or fruit on their heads.

I searched through every site in which I could find a photo or reference to his works, and could not find this particular piece in any of them. The woman in this carving is older and more worn out than the others. When you look at her face, you get a sense of how tired and discouraged she is, but with the acceptance that this is her life, although I see a hint of annoyance, as well.

The piece is larger than most of the similar ones I found.

Professional auction sites typically expect his pieces to go for $100.00-$200.00 or more.

Condition:   Excellent.  This carving is in perfect condition.

Dimensions:   31″H x 10″W (basket) x 6″D.

Price:  $94.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $5.17 for a total of $99.17. Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Location & Purchasing: This piece is located in our display case (#27) at Cabot Mill Antiques, Fort Andross, 14 Maine Street, Brunswick ME. You can purchase directly through them by visiting that beautiful shop, 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (7:00 pm on Fridays).

Alternatively, if you don’t mind waiting a bit:

Shipping & Delivery: Because this item is on display 20 miles from us, I may not even know for several days (usually over a weekend) whether or not an item is still available, but can bring it back to Lewiston for you the next time I’m in Brunswick updating our display. At that point, you’d be able to take advantage of local pick up at my office (by appointment only), or I can get it delivered to you per the next paragraph.

We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn most days, or along the Lewiston-Lisbon-Topsham-Brunswick route (dates vary), for a $15.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $15.00.

Shipping via USPS is $20.00.

Original Pastel of Award Winning Pomeranian by Noted Animal Artist Louise Lopina, Dated 1967

The cardboard backing has the following information:

“Contains Pastel. Please do not bend, fold or [?]…”

“Pastel is for high scoring Pom in trial. Qualifying score essential.”

Then “Louise Lopina” (the artist).

“But he got it!”

There’s quite a bit of information on-line about Louise Lopina and her work, which has been acknowledged world-wide and has received several awards. She was even commissioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC), in celebration of its 125th anniversary, to create the organization’s dedicatory poster.

I was unable to determine whether Louise is still alive from an internet search; I found no obituary but her website hasn’t been updated since 2014. However, after sending off an email to the address listed on her website I did get a response!

Unfortunately, Louise wasn’t able to shed any further light on this pup who apparently did so well in whichever competition it was over 50 years ago. Given the number of paintings she has produced, and the fact that this was done more than half a century ago, that should be no surprise!

Louise’s originals have sold for several hundred dollars on auction sites, as recently as November of this year (2020).

It’s somewhat rare to have the handwritten notes regarding the subject matter that accompany this original artwork – what a gift!

Condition:   Very Good

Dimensions:  The frame is 25 1/2″ H x 20″ W.

Price:  $280.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $15.40 for a total of $295.40.

Refurbished School Desk with Unique (!) Covering

I suspect you’d be the only person in town rocking the design this old, refurbished school desk has. It’s very 1960s cool. Someone put some time and effort into updating this desk to make it look like this!

Condition:   Very good except for the spot in the upper left hand corner that looks like it could have had something hot set on it, leaving a scorch mark.

Dimensions:   27″ H x 18″ D x 24″ W.  The cubby is 4″ H.

Price:  $12.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $.66 for a total of $12.66.  Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:
Shipping this item is not recommended because the cost to value ratio would be prohibitive.  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn for a $15.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $15.00.  Your best bet is to pick it up at our office.

Gone! Inexpensive, No Frills, Computer Table with Monitor

This corner computer table is pretty basic but I’m sure someone can find a use for it. The Sharp monitor that comes with it is probably pretty old, but perhaps it’s still good enough for a game of Pong?

The guys at the auction separated the table top from its base for easier transport. I’m unable to put it back together; my arms just are not long enough to wrap around it, and it’s reasonably heavy given that it’s particle board.

I’m happy to get rid of both pieces for what they cost me.

Condition:   The computer table has a couple of dings but otherwise seems to be in good shape.  I know nothing about the monitor.

Dimensions:   The table top is 42″ W at its longest width.  The base is 27″ H.

Price:  $20.00 for both pieces, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $1.10 for a total of $21.10.  Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:  Shipping this item is not recommended because the cost to value ratio would be prohibitive.  Unfortunately, we can’t deliver, either because the desk top is too awkward for me to lift, and I wouldn’t be able to position it into my Jeep for transport.  Sorry!
