The cardboard backing has the following information:
“Contains Pastel. Please do not bend, fold or [?]…”
“Pastel is for high scoring Pom in trial. Qualifying score essential.”
Then “Louise Lopina” (the artist).
“But he got it!”
There’s quite a bit of information on-line about Louise Lopina and her work, which has been acknowledged world-wide and has received several awards. She was even commissioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC), in celebration of its 125th anniversary, to create the organization’s dedicatory poster.
I was unable to determine whether Louise is still alive from an internet search; I found no obituary but her website hasn’t been updated since 2014. However, after sending off an email to the address listed on her website I did get a response!
Unfortunately, Louise wasn’t able to shed any further light on this pup who apparently did so well in whichever competition it was over 50 years ago. Given the number of paintings she has produced, and the fact that this was done more than half a century ago, that should be no surprise!
Louise’s originals have sold for several hundred dollars on auction sites, as recently as November of this year (2020).
It’s somewhat rare to have the handwritten notes regarding the subject matter that accompany this original artwork – what a gift!
