SOLD! Antique Inlaid Design Coffee Table with Glass Bottom Butler’s Tray

This is such a lovely set.  The glass butler’s tray with curved wood frame sets perfectly on the understated coffee table.  What joy it would be to bring to your spouse or child a cup of hot chocolate and a slice of something sweet in the afternoon, accompanied by a white linen napkin adorned with a super cool napkin ring!

Check out our alligator head napkin rings here: https://heritagecollectiblesmaine.com/2021/02/14/these-are-some-wicked-funky-alligator-napkin-rings/
or our dainty vintage porcelain ones here: https://heritagecollectiblesmaine.com/2021/02/07/6-vintage-porcelain-napkin-rings-with-lovely-roses/
or best of all, our pewter bunny napkin rings, here: https://heritagecollectiblesmaine.com/2021/02/14/set-of-8-adorable-pewter-bunny-napkin-rings/

But, I digress. How I would love to pamper a special someone this way, and wish I had when Johnny was still around.  (Then again, I did bring him his favorite Spam “sammiches” with some regularity despite my aversion to the stuff.)

In any event, this coffee table with butler’s tray is reminiscent of older times, as they seemed to go out of style by the 1950s.

Condition:  The coffee table is in very good condition, both structurally and visually.  The molding that holds the glass to the wood of the butler’s tray seems to be drying out, so the glass is loose in places, and could use some caulking or something.

Dimensions:  The coffee table is bout 15″ high x 29″ wide x 17″ deep.  The butler’s tray is about 1 1/2″ high x 31″ wide x 19″ deep, so is just a bit wider and deeper than the table it rests on perfectly.

FIRM Price:  $38.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales tax of $2.64 for a total of $40.64.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:  Free local pickup.  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn for a $10.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $10.00.  Shipping is $30.00.

SOLD! Black Aluminum Patio Set – 2 Benches, 1 Chair, 2 Side Tables – From Our Lawn & Garden Shop

This is a decent, fairly lightweight but durable patio set consisting of 2 benches, a chair and 2 side tables (2 have sold).  Because each piece is made of aluminum, not cast iron, you won’t see the rust that iron is prone to – and they’re not nearly as heavy to move around or put into storage.

Condition:  Most of the pieces are in very good condition, but one of the benches and the chair both have white spots that apparently developed during and after the manufacturing process.  It does appear that a person who’s handy (or interested in the process) can fix the problem – I would have tried black spray paint, but it may take a bit more than that, according to this article from Products Finishing: https://www.pfonline.com/articles/addressing-white-spots-on-black-anodized-parts

It doesn’t seem like a huge amount of work; especially since the set is less than half the price of what you’d pay at WalMart, if you were to purchase all 7 pieces.  (Seems to me that saving several hundred dollars is worth some elbow grease… or even ignoring the problem entirely.)

Dimensions:

Black aluminum patio benches: 17″ to the seat, 36″ high overall x 49″ long.
Black aluminum patio chair:  16″ to the seat, 36″ high overall x 24″ wide.
Black aluminum patio side tables: 18″ high x 18″ wide x 18″ deep.

FIRM Prices:
1 Black aluminum patio bench, no blemishes/white patches:  $95.00.
1 Black aluminum patio bench, white blemishes: $85.00
1 Black aluminum patio chair, white blemishes:  $75.00
2 Black aluminum patio side tables, no or minor blemishes/white patches: $45.00 each or $75.00 pair.
All 5 pieces for $275.00.  Plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax.

A similar set in new condition at WalMart would cost over $700.00.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:  Free local pickup.  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn or in Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for a delivery fee that would be between $10.00-$25.00, depending on how many pieces you’re purchasing.  (I think I can get them all into the Jeep, although I’m not 100% on that. Shipping would be rather costly for the entire set.

Special Orders – Are You Looking for Something Hard to Find?

The cobra above sold immediately after we posted it, with about a dozen people waiting in line, hoping everyone else would drop out.

We monitor and/or attend dozens of estate sales and auctions every month, and speak frequently with local auctioneers.

If there’s something you’re looking for – whether it’s antique, vintage or contemporary; furniture, art, spiritual (ancients, indigenous, other), tools, collectibles, funky, or what-have-you— we’re happy to search out such items.

Presuming they’re available in your price range, condition and so forth, we can obtain the item and if you purchase it immediately (before we list it on this website), we’ll take 25% off what would otherwise be our retail price.

We won’t bid on something without checking with you first, unless we’re positive we can sell it anyway!

FMI: Give Linda a call at 207-740-2247. (If you have an out of state number, it might be best to text first, or at least leave a voice mail. I get dozens of spam/scam calls a day, and rarely answer any number coming from out of state for that reason.)

Presently I’m looking for the following:

… a set of cemetery chairs,
… metal / iron fencing of the vintage type, art deco or Victorian in design (about 150 feet, 3 +/- feet high),
… brass cobras (several requests),
… very inexpensive particle board cabinets and/or shelving units for customers with less money,
… Marimekko fiber arts, and
… a Victorian settee that’s in rough shape, for someone who wants to reupholster to her specific style..

If you have any leads, let me know!

Wrought vs Rod vs Cast Iron – What’s the Difference?

machinedesign_7420_0416mddiffbtwcastwroughtpromo_0.png

Until doing a bit of research for this blog, I had always figured that when people said “rod” iron, they actually meant “wrought”. I didn’t know there was a difference. (Now, if I’d asked my late husband, he would have told me. He knew these things. I still have much to learn.)

Anyway, here are some quick explanations from a web search, along with links to two good articles.

Cast Iron vs Wrought Iron.

According to an article in MachineDesign.com (by Brad Done, April 01, 2016):

Cast iron is iron that has been melted, poured into a mold, and allowed to cool.

Wrought iron is iron that has been heated and then worked with tools. In fact, the term “wrought” derived from the past participle of the word “worked.”

You can read the full article here:

https://www.machinedesign.com/materials/metals/article/21832007/whats-the-difference-between-cast-and-wrought-iron#:~:text=Cast%20iron%20is%20iron%20that,of%20the%20word%20%E2%80%9Cworked.%E2%80%9D

The photo above is from this article.

Wrought Iron vs Rod Iron.

Rod iron is actually metal cut from an iron bar used to make nails. Wrought iron is the phrase you are looking for when you think of stair railings. The difference is the word ‘wrought’. It means “beaten out or shaped by a hammer”.

This is from an article in Vision Stairways and Millwork, and can be found here:
https://visionstairwaysandmillwork.com/rod-iron-stair-railings-rot-iron-wrought-iron-stair-builders-atlanta-nashville-miami-denver/#:~:text=Rod%20Iron%20is%20actually%20metal,or%20shaped%20by%20a%20hammer%22.

Wish I had the time to just research this stuff all day… there’s so much knowledge out there!

SOLD. Two Great Wooden Boxes in Red Paint

Here are a couple of sturdy boxes painted in red.  Stack them, display them, use them!  They’re boxes and you’ll always find a use for them!

The first box is built sort of like a file box with the carved out holes for handles.  In fact, it probably could be used for one.

The second box has a lid and a nice little white knob on that lid.  The inside isn’t painted, so the bare wood shows – just the way we like it!

Condition:  Both are in good solid condition, although the paint on each has worn or chipped off in places.

Dimensions:  Box #1 (file type): 12 1/4″ x 12 1/4″ x 12 1/4″.   Box #2 (with lid): 14″ wide x 9 1/2″ high x 11 1/2″ deep (add another half inch for the hinges that stick out).

FIRM Price:  Box #1: $12.00 (with tax, $12.66).  Box #2: $22.00 (with tax, $23.21).  Both for $30.00 (with tax, $31.65.

SOLD! This Gold Victorian Chair Has Great Solid Bones!

The bones, as they say, of this chair are just great.  The dark cherry or mahogany wood is solid and sturdy, and seems very well made.  It’s a lovely piece, which is far more gold in color than the photos show.

Condition:  As noted above, structurally, this chair is in great condition.  There are some small areas to address, however.  The upholstery needs a good cleaning, although it looks worse in the photos than in person.  And the lining under the chair is beginning to fray in one place, and has become untacked in another (see the photos below).

Dimensions:  26″ wide x 44″ high.  Total depth is 32.5″.   It’s 13″ to the seat, which is 21″ deep.

FIRM Price:  $85.00.  Plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $4.68 for a total of $89.68.

Shipping is possible but could be prohibitive in price.

A Very Solid Quilt Rack in Great Shape! (Update: We Now Have 2!)

Quilt racks come in all shapes and sizes, from seriously grand to rather flimsy.  Ours is somewhere in the middle.  It’s not wicked pricey, but neither is it apt to fall apart if you throw a couple of heavy quilts or afghans on it.

Update: We just picked up a second one, that’s close to identical, but is a lighter pine color. Hope to get photos of both together at some point.)

Condition:  It’s in great condition.  It’s sturdy and it’s solid, with very few dings or blemishes.

Dimensions:  33″ high x 28 1/2″ wide x 13 1/2″ deep.

FIRM Price:  $22.00.  Plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $1.21 for a total of $23.21.   Buy both for just $36.00.

Shipping is $24.00 for one, or $40.00 for both because of their size.

SOLD. For the Plumber or Handy-Person in Your Life – Or Just Because They’re Very Cool!

My late husband could do anything – well, at least, I thought so.  By day, he installed survival systems on billion-dollar Naval destroyers all over the world, and then (eventually) came home and fixed the plumbing and electricity in the house.

Oh what a kick he would have gotten out of these faucet soap dish and paper towel holders!  And what a kick I would have gotten out of giving them to him!

Aren’t they just super cool?

Condition:  Excellent, like new condition.  I’m pretty sure they were never actually used as faucets, but it doesn’t detract from the idea and fun!

Dimensions:  The soap dish is 6″ high x 7″ wide x 5 1/2″ deep.  The paper towel holder is 16″ high x 7 1/2″ in diameter.

FIRM Price:  $49.00 for the pair.  Plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $2.70 for a total of $51.70.  Alternatively, the soap dish is $28.00 ($29.54 with tax) and the paper towel holder is $30.00 ($31.65 with tax).

Shipping is $20.00.
