SOLD! “Fragrance” by Boris Skvirsky – 1887-1941 – $259.95

Fragrance 7 Fragrance 1 Fragrance 2

We recently purchased “Fragrance” at an auction in Ossipee NH, after falling in love with it.  We still aren’t certain we want to sell the piece but we are, after all, in the antiques and collectibles business, and if we were to keep everything we fell in love with, we’d need a 20 room mansion and an income to match.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far about this gorgeous piece from:  http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/deco-folio-fragrance

By Boris Skvirsky, Private Collection | Using the female form to create balanced graphic elements, the recently rediscovered, 1930’s Parisian portfolio of Russian ex-patriot Skvirsky is available to the public for the first time since its original exhibition. Printed on art-grade paper and encased in an imported, ribbed, gold-toned hardwood frame under Plexiglas. It includes a solid brass museum plate etched with the title and the artist’s name.

Based on the description, and the fact that the piece is no longer for sale, we seem to have the exact item described above.

MISSING: Antique Corn Cob / Apple Drying Rack – $48.00

Corn Cob Dryer 4 Corn Cob Dryer 1

Our corn drying rack has been missing since we did a show in Brunswick last year.  We had it, and then we didn’t… it never made it back to the shop.  And of course, no one has seen it.  It’s unfortunate because this was one of the best examples of this type of dryer that we’ve seen before or since.

This antique corn (or apple) drying rack is one of the loveliest – and sturdiest – we’ve seen. It’s 18 inches long (not including the non-original copper wire added to the top for hanging purposes), and is made of one solid piece of metal that’s been cut, formed and twisted to create the shapes you see in the pictures.

Most of the other drying racks being offered for sale appear far flimsier than this one… even those that are going for a boatload more money.

Corn Cob Dryer 3 Corn Cob Dryer 2

These racks were used in the days before food dehydrators as a space-saving device. One could easily dry corn and apples on a flat screen, but that takes up lots of room.  Here, you can get 10 cobs onto a small space and hang them from a beam or wall or what-have-you.

Efficient, and lovely, too.

Price:  Buy-it-now price is $48.00 plus $5.00 shipping & handling if not picked up in person.  Opening bid if on eBay is $36.95.
# Available:  one
Size:  18″ long plus about 3″ for the copper hanging wire
Approximate Age:  unknown; vintage American
Defects, Nicks and/or Blemishes: item has the typical rust found on an antique metal item, which can be easily cleaned if desired

A World at War & Women at Work: the Chic Utility of the 1940’s

A great find… vintage New Year’s postcards from Hemline Quarterly, a learned blog on historical fashion trends. Seems well worth following.

Stephanie A.'s avatarHemline Quarterly

My lovely grandmother Betty (third from the left) & her well-dressed girlfriends in 1946.

Greetings, ladies & gentlemen!  I am finally updating!!!  I actually wrote this article awhile ago but have been trying to find some images that are unique and illustrate the awesomeness that is 1940’s fashion.  The photo above is from my grandmother’s collection of photographs and I think it’s a great example of mid-40’s dresses.  Growing up in the Midwest, my grandmother didn’t live in the fashion capital of America, but she and her girlfriends look super chic and stylish in their (probably rayon) dresses with sweetheart necklines, knee-length (or higher) hemlines, and peeptoe shoes.  Going through her photos was pretty inspiring, and it made me want to write more articles for this blog.  So, if you want to know more about what made fashion in the 1940’s special, keep reading.

Vonnegut

Vonnegut

“Go into the arts.  I’m not kidding….” Kurt Vonnegut.  For those of us without the talent to make a living at the arts, he suggests doing anyway.

There’s also attending, supporting, donating and volunteering at the arts.  Without such engagement, the various arts are not sustainable; without such engagement, our own minds don’t expand.

Without such engagement, the world would be a dreary place.

Sunday Afternoon Music

At the boutique, with a mix of Finnish folk/pop group Varttina on my iPad. Love how haunting it is; makes me yearn for the country of my ancestors even though I’ve never been there. Yet.

Beware Anyone Who Says…

Heritage Tidbits 23

Don’t know the source of this quote, but I found it somewhere.  Seems like a good way to live one’s life….if there’s an inconsistency in the message, perhaps one should question a little further the person sending that message.

This doesn’t mean that inconsistencies equal untruths (although in the Tidbits example above, there’s a giant caveat emptor!); it only means the reality may be a bit more complex than is being presented.
