When the Universe Gives You a Sign… Sometimes Ya Just Gotta Run with It

Opening a retail shop was supposed to be at the tail-end of a two-year plan for this business, which we started in August of 2014.

We’d test it out, put items in various flea markets and antique shops, try eBay and take part in a few shows.

But open a shop?  Nope.  Not for a while.

HA!

Within just a couple of months of offering our services to do garage sale and basement clean outs, our large house looked like it came directly off an episode of Hoarders.  Boxes were everywhere, and we (and our three dogs) had to pick our way gingerly among very narrow paths to get from room to room.

Worse, we couldn’t remember what was in the boxes, no matter how carefully we packed and labeled our treasures.

So in November, we rented a small retail space – not to have a shop, but to have a place we could store our inventory in a fashion where we could tell what we had.  Sure made it a lot easier to decide which pieces of art or vintage dishes or first edition books or signage or estate jewelry or whatever we would take to whichever shop or show it was destined for.

Since we had the retail space, though, we did try to have the shop open for those who wanted to browse or buy, but that didn’t work out so well at first.

Both of us had jobs that are full-time plus (I was working full-time at one job and half time at another, and John has a very demanding supervisory position at a local newspaper), so with the shows we were doing, and the clean-outs we were offered, and the auctions we were hitting for more inventory (and just for the pure fun of it), having a thriving retail store was out of the question.

Then I realized I was burning out from sheer exhaustion from working so many hours at my two jobs plus the business.  So I cut my full-time job down to part-time at the beginning of March.

And lo & behold, what happened next?  Two days ago we got a call from our shop’s landlord that the piercing studio in the space next to us was shutting down… and did we want that space?   It would give us three times the retail floor space we currently have, plus other amenities… and we could move our already way over-crowded shop without having to load the Jeep 4,000 times or rent a giant U-Haul!

Sometimes it seems the universe is hitting you upside the head, saying “DO THIS!”.

We haven’t settled on a move-in date yet (there’s some work to be done to the new space to make it more usable for us) but around the middle of May, Heritage Collectibles will be in a great new spot at 189 Main Street in Lewiston, Maine!

We’ll have room for compatible vendors to rent inexpensive booths, and already have our first commitment from a gift basket company!

I guess ya never know where life will lead you, no matter how carefully you try to plan.

Corpus Mills

images
Gotta love voice recognition software.

I opened a message I’d sent to myself via my iPhone (it was one of those quickies that’s intended to later be added to my To Do List) and was stumped to find the following:

“Corpus mills for lunch”. Huh?  Not a clue what that meant.

It was several minutes before something triggered in my brain and I had a mini Eureka! experience.

Turns out it was “Cook some smelts for lunch”.  (I sent myself the message as I was afraid I’d forget them until they stunk up the refrigerator.)

Corpus mills – cook some smelts. Okay, then….

(Not that this has anything to do with our antiques & collectibles business.)

Nude Art and Vintage Jewelry

095

Nude art and vintage jewelry…. !!

My husband and I own a small antiques shop (Heritage Collectibles) that has all sorts of antiques – farm implements, kitchen utensils & dishes, lamps, signage, old toys, etc – but we’re concentrating on vintage jewelry, and believe it or not, nude art!

We love the classy nudes and pin up girls… not the tacky stuff… so have been having fun searching it out. Our inventory changes pretty often because we’ve found that lots of others like the same kind of art, and the buyers are generally women!

Come on in sometime and take a look. Our shop is very small (it’s really a boutique) but we can also be found at Cabot Mill Antiques in Brunswick and the Undercover Antique Mall in Oxford…

And by mid April, we’ll be in the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall in Sherman Oaks, which is an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles near where my daughter lives.

Heritage Collectibles is at 5 Park Street in Lewiston. Our hours are limited because we both work a lot of hours at our day jobs, but we’re ordinarily in the shop Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays from 12:00-5:00 – unless we’re exhibiting somewhere, at an auction… (It’s definitely best to call first; you can reach me at 207 740 2247.)

Coming up, we’re exhibiting at the Manchester (ME) Lions Club Home & Garden Show on April 10-12 at the Augusta Civic Center; the Diva Mall at Lost Valley on April 23rd, and the Monmouth Spring Quilt Show on April 25th.

Would love to see you!

UPS vs USPS – What the Heck?

ups vs usps

A few days ago I won 3 items at an on-line auction, totaling $40.00.  Not a big order, and nothing very heavy of course… I know better than that.

So imagine my surprise when I opened my email and the shipping fee was $158.00! Excuse me?  How much did you say?

The auction company (based in Las Vegas; I’m in Maine) tried to tell me it was because of the size and weight of the package.  “Oh nay” says I.  “I’ve shipped much larger and heavier boxes all the way from here to my daughter’s house in Los Angeles for half that price”.  Several times, in fact.

The auction company shrugged its shoulders.  Or at least the woman I was emailing with did. Or at least I imagined that she did.  In any event, she said that was the price and I could either accept it, or contact another company to go to the auction house, get my items, and do the packaging, shipping and so forth.

Ugh.  Not much of a choice, it seemed.

So I called her with a credit card, pointing out that the address on the card was different than the business’s post office box address, and they might as well just ship the package to my house.

And lo and behold!  The shipping fee that UPS was charging dropped by over $100.00!  Just because it was being shipped to a residence, rather than a post office box.

Methinks this is an interesting experience, and certainly one that others should be aware of. (Or was I the only person in the world who didn’t know this?)

I mean, really… the post office has larger boxes that hold packages too big for the regular mail box.  I get them all the time.  And I don’t see how it’s that much more difficult for a UPS driver to take my package inside the post office and leave it on the counter for Tim or someone else to deal with… not dissimilar from coming to my door to give me my package.

Anyone have an explanation?

Vintage Book – The House of The Seven Gables, by Nathaniel Hawthorne

018
019 020 021

Subject / Topic:  From the SparkNotes.com summary:  “The House of the Seven Gables begins with a preface that identifies the work as a romance, not a novel. As such, Hawthorne prepares readers for the fluid mixture of realism and fantasy that the romance genre allows. The preface also conveys the major theme of the book, which Hawthorne refers to as a moral: “the wrong-doing of one generation lives into the successive ones, and . . . becomes a pure and uncontrollable mischief.”

Format: Hardcover.

Published:  copyright 1851; this edition appears to be 1904

Inscriptions Inside:  See photos above; the inside front cover pages have multiple notes written on them, as does the inside back cover.  The bottom of the book’s pages has the date “1910” written across them (only noticeable when the book is turned on its side).

Condition:  If it weren’t for all the scribblings in the book, we could say it’s in very good condition with some fading typical of its age.

Price:  $9.95 plus Maine State Sales Tax of 5.5%.

Message re Our Products:
All of the items we offer are vintage, antique or simply pre-owned.  Therefore, reasonable wear & tear is to be expected, and our items are sold as seen and as described in the photos and/or in person.
We try to describe any damage, nicks, blemishes or other problems of which we are aware in any and all of our listings, and always include plenty of clear photographs which are integral to the description, so please review them closely.
Also, please be aware that vintage and antique items are unlikely to be in factory condition, so if you aren’t used to buying antique or vintage items – and are in fact looking for a pristine, unused item – a new reproduction may be better suited for you. We ordinarily do not “clean up” items because such cleaning may detract from their value.
We are specific and honest in our descriptions because we want happy buyers who will return and/or refer their friends!
