This was originally a book about the Buick Motor Company titled “The Factory Behind The Car”, but over 70 years ago, an avid Maine news junkie by the name of Gertrude L. McKown, of McKown Hill in Boothbay Harbor, turned it into a scrap book, which includes newspaper clippings and other articles and information pieces from about 1940-1946.
Every single page – from the very first to the last – of the original book is covered with a clipping, chronicling events such as weddings, funerals, local catastrophes, ships launched in the local area (including YMS 104 and 106, mine sweepers), horse race info, and world news items in general as well as items of local interest. Included are some cartoons, ads, poems and clippings on war heroes. Some of the original book can be seen between the clippings.
The book also includes a typed letter to Mrs. O. M. McKown thanking her for her help in launching the YMS 104 built by Frank L. Sample Jr., Inc., Yachts and Vessels of Boothbay.
This is not only a fascinating, important historical document of the times in Maine during WWII; it is a wonderful insight into the interests of Ms. McKown.
