SOLD! Harlequin-Inspired Waterfall Dresser – Look at This Beauty!

waterfall

https://upwithfurniture.com/2013/03/08/waterfall-dressers/

The term Waterfall is given to a style of furniture produced from the 1920’s through the 40’s.  The shape of the pieces has a rounded horizontal edge usually with ridges that resemble a waterfall.  The wood has a rich warm look and the handles are Art Deco in design, often a combination of Bakelite and brass.

A lot of people mistakenly believe that because of the style and the shiny, interesting wood pattern that waterfall dressers are fine furniture and valuable but except for some that were initially made as more expensive pieces, waterfalls were actually mass-produced with cheaper materials.  A closer look will show that the frame is plywood and that the drawers, though heavy and dovetailed are also plywood.  Plywood was a new material in the 1920’s and it allowed furniture makers to create curves in wood that beforehand were only the work of fine craftsmen. Waterfall funiture has all the hallmarks of the Art Deco movement which began in France in the early 20th century but really gained popularity in the 1920’s.  Its emphasis was on streamlined symmetrical shapes and geometric design; it was influenced by popular culture such as the discovery of King Tut’s tomb which created a craze for all things Egyptian and cubism in art.  The materials used were modern such as aluminum, stainless steel and Bakelite.

The above information is reprinted from UpWithFurniture.com.

We’ve had this stunning dresser for a while, but it’s been buried and hard for customers to see… I’d pretty much forgotten about it as well.

The piece is absolutely beautiful, but has sustained some minor damage (scratches) while sitting in the shop, which you can see in the pictures below.  There’s also a section on the bottom right (below the door to the cabinet) that has been bumped up against too hard by something, and is slightly detached.  For these reasons, the original $499.00 price has been reduced by $100.00, down to $399.00.

Condition:  Very good, with the minor damage noted above.

Dimensions:  50″W x 36″H x 18″D.  The built in mirror at the back of the piece adds another 6″ to its height.

Price:  Just $399.00!!  (Plus the obligatory 5.5% State of Maine Sales Tax, of course.)

A Pair of Wonderful Vintage Wood and Wrought Iron Finials

finials-2

According to Wikipedia  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finial)

A finial or hip-knob is an element marking the top or end of some object, often formed to be a decorative feature. In architecture it is a decorative device, typically carved in stone, employed decoratively to emphasize the apex of a dome, spire, tower, roof, or gable or any of various distinctive ornaments at the top, end, or corner of a building or structure. Where there are several such elements they may be called pinnacles. Smaller finials in materials such as metal or wood are used as a decorative ornament on the tops or ends of poles or rods such as tent-poles or curtain rods or any object such as a piece of furniture. These are frequently seen on top of bed posts or clocks. Decorative finials are also commonly used to fasten lampshades, and as an ornamental element at the end of the handles of souvenir spoons. The charm at the end of a pull chain (such as for a ceiling fan or a lamp) is also known as a finial.

During the various dynasties in China, a finial was worn on the top of the hats civil or military officials wore during formal court ceremonies. The finial was changed to a knob for other daily usage (including semi-formal ceremonies).

I don’t know what the two finials we have here were originally used for… bedposts, perhaps?  They are, however, very heavy and intricately shaped, although they may be missing a top piece.

Please scroll down for more photos!

Condition:  Very good.

Dimensions:  about 10″ tall

Price:  $24 for the pair.

Location: You’ll find the finials, along with other of our vintage and antique inventory at Hathaway Mill Antiques, 10 Water Street, Waterville (ME). Their phone is 207-877-0250. Hathaway Mill Antiques is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are booth #23 (or HCB).

Shipping: These would probably cost as much to ship as the price of the finials themselves because of their size and weight..

Local Pick Up Available in Auburn, Maine.  If you’re willing to wait, the finials can be relocated to a private home in Auburn (ME), and seen by appointment – which ordinarily would be on weekends only.  Because we’ve been stood up before, the finials must be paid for in advance before we’ll bring them back from Waterville.

Payment Through This Website:  This site supposedly offers the option of paying directly but there’s some kind of weird glitch and payment info for every new item posted somehow auto-populates to every previous item.  Since that’s obviously wrong, I’ve had to eliminate that option on most items.  My apologies!  Please connect with me via heritagecollectiblesmaine@gmail.com for purchase info.  Because my primary business is non-stop and demanding, I may not get back to you until early morning or late evening. (More apologies!)

Our Other Maine Location (we’ve recently downsized)

Oxford. Our more contemporary inventory is located at Happy Trails Antiques & Flea Market at 891 Main Street, Oxford (ME). Their phone is 207-515-0927. Happy Trails is open Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays from 9:00-5:00, and Sundays from 10:00-4:00. Our booth number is S75.  Until recently, we had 3 booths at Happy Trails but downsized because of time limitations.

By the way, if you like classy (not tacky) nude art like we do, check out our other website here: www.nude.boutique.  I haven’t had a chance lately to add any of our newer inventory to the site, but hope to soon.

In memory of my beloved husband John K Snyder… 20 Sept 1956 – 21 Oct 2016.

He loved our shops, especially the section we called Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera – that was his baby.  Johnny was an avid reader, who was passionate about the feel of real books in his hands… history was his forte, but in true Renaissance Man fashion, John knew a lot about a great many subjects.  He would often be so fascinated by a book he was reading that he would excitedly read aloud passages to me, so we could discuss the ideas contained therein.

He loved me like crazy, and oh how I loved him.

Follow our blog at https://warrior-project.org, in honor of my husband, and all others who have been lost to internal demons that in the end, overwhelmed them.

All of the profits after expenses from Heritage Collectibles, Books & Maps will go to help fund The Grief Warrior Project, a suicide prevention drop-in and counseling center in the process of being developed, although it has been in hiatus during the pandemic.  I’m hoping to begin working on this again during the spring of 2023.

(Please Note: The Grief Warrior Project is in no way intended to be reflective of, or piggy back off, Wounded Warriors which serves those military personnel wounded after September 11, 2001.  Like too many others, John was a warrior long before then.)

GONE! Curb Alert! Slatboard Display Cabinet and Other Misc Items

Slatboard Fixture/Display Case

Slatboard Fixture/Display Case

Slatboard Fixture/Display Case

Slatboard Fixture/Display Case

We like this solid slatboard display cabinet but it’s just too large for our shop, so now it’s free and will be outside Heritage Books & Maps, 5 Park Street in Lewiston during the times when Heritage Collectibles (189 Main St) is open.  For the next few days, those hours will be:

Friday, November 18 from about 10:00-1:30,
Saturday, November 19 from 10:00-4:00, and
Sunday, November 20 from 10-1:30.

There will also be boxes of free magazines (Vanity Fair, real estate & property management, and loads of others including Soap Opera Digest types), a bowling ball, a damaged entertainment center, and probably more as we reorganize the shops!

Everything has to go back inside when we close up each day, which will be a serious pain in the you-know-what, so please… come get anything you’re interested in today!

GONE! Another Inexpensive Entertainment Center – NOW FREE and In Front of the Shop!

entertainment-center-with-plexi-door
Here we go again!  We’ve found ourselves in possession of yet another piece of furniture that we’d like to get rid of FAST!  Several people have looked at it, but unfortunately didn’t take it… and we’re a bit tired of dragging it in and out of the shop on those days when we’re open.

As it turns out, we weren’t open this week so the piece wasn’t outside for some lucky person to grab.  However, it will now be available, along with a few other items (need a bowling ball, anyone?).

SO IT’S NOW FREE!  Please come and get it.  It will be available …
Friday, November 18 from about 10:00-1:30,
Saturday, November 19 from 10:00-4:00, and
Sunday, November 20 from 10-1:30.

We can only put it outside when the shop is open, so you must come for it during those times!  (Hopefully, it will be gone today.)

This is a nice little entertainment center that has some obvious damage (apparently a plant sitting on top of it leaked several times). And the plexi glass door sometimes sticks.

But the price is right!  So, come on in and take it away!

By the way, we have a second entertainment center almost identical to this one in storage that’s in better shape.  That one will be $10.00 or free with $50.00 in other purchases.  As soon as I can dig it out and haul it over here, that is.

Condition:  It’s made of that particle board stuff – not real wood – so when the plant leaked on it, the particle board got pretty damaged as you can see from the picture below.

Dimensions:  45″H x 22″W x 20.5″D.

Price:  FREE!

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

Payment Information:   Please see our “Details: Payment & Pricing” page.

SOLD! Hitching Post / Horse Head Smoking Stand

ash-tray-horse-6ash-tray-horse-3

Although I haven’t been a smoker for nearly four decades, I still have a fondness for the vintage floor model smoking stands/ash trays of the good old days… in fact, we have one at home that I absolutely love, especially since it isn’t used for cigarette butts!

This hitching post style smoking stand is another of my favorites.

Condition:  Very good.  It’s a bit rusty in places, and definitely needs some cleaning, but those are minor cosmetic issues.  I even recently found the glass ashtray that goes with it – it was packed in another box!  (Will get updated pictures soon.)

Dimensions:  It’s about 24.5″ high x 10″ in diameter.

Price:  $28.00.   (Plus the obligatory 5.5% State of Maine Sales Tax, of course.)

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

SOLD!! Good, Clean, Quality Used Dog House

dog-house-3

We got this used dog house on the chance that we could set it up inside our home (with a small rug and blankets) for our little Rudi.  However, it’s really too big for anywhere inside the house, and we don’t leave the dogs outside on their own long enough to make it worthwhile.

Condition:  Very good and clean.  It does have heavy some gouges along the peak of the roof, as you can see from the pictures.

Dimensions:  Coming soon. I’d say it’s about 24″H (at its peak) x 18″‘W (walls, not including the roof’s sides which probably add another 6 inches to the width) x 30″L.

Price:  $12.50.   (Plus the obligatory 5.5% State of Maine Sales Tax, of course.) As near as we can tell, this was probably about $75.00 or so brand new.

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

SOLD! Antique Blue Child-Sized Potty Chair

potty-in-blue

This antique child-sized potty chair came from a local estate sale at a home filled with an eclectic mix of old and new.  The pictures don’t show the color correctly; it’s actually blue, not grey.  It’s a wonderful accent piece for a farmhouse style decor, or any home that likes a mixture of vintage and contemporary.

Condition:
Structurally, the potty is very solid – and heavier than you’d expect.  There are some dings and cosmetic damage as you can see in the pictures.  (It looks like there was probably a plant placed on it, from which the water leaked.)

Dimensions:  Coming soon.

Location: The potty is at our booth (#23) at the Hathaway Mill Antique Mall, 10 Water Street, Waterville ME 04901.

Price:  $75.00.   (Plus the obligatory 5.5% State of Maine Sales Tax, of course.)

Layaway Plan:  Please see our “Details: Layaway Plan” page.

Payment Information:   Please see our “Details: Payment & Pricing” page.

Shipping & Delivery Information:  Please see our “Details: Shipping & Delivery” page.

Please note: The shop at 189 Main Street in Lewiston is closed from September 1-25, 2017 while Linda visits her daughter, son-in-law and new grandson!

Some Quick Details:

  • Prices Are Firm.  We do not negotiate on the prices listed in our blogs… they’re set based on what the item cost us and our expenses in running the shop.
  • Sales. We do occasionally have sales or reduce the prices on an item (usually if the item has been in the shop for at least 6 months with plenty of marketing).  If so, that reduced price will be posted.
  • Holding Items.  Sorry, not without payment.  We used to when we first opened the shops, and found that too often the person asking us to hold an item never came back and we lost sales in the interim to someone who was standing there with cash in hand. Obviously, that’s not good business.
  • Questions.  This is tough… I’d like to be responsive to everyone who has questions, but I work full time as a social worker, and full time at this shop hoping that someday it will make enough money so I can retire from that social work job.  This means I have very limited time to respond to questions, especially if those questions have already been answered in this blog or on our various posts.  So I may not have time to respond…
  • Dealers. We’re happy to talk to you!  Please remember to bring a copy of your State Resellers License.
