“Certificate of Promotion to the High School” – Lawrence Worden, 1929

We found this “Promotion to the High School” – I love that wording! – certificate for Lawrence Worden in a clean out last year, and had hoped to find a relative or descendant of young master Worden or either of the two gentlemen who signed the document, who might want to have the piece.  As the photo above shows, the certificate is signed by Philip Sugg (teacher) and R G Oakes (the Superintendent of Schools), and dated June 1929,

Condition:   It’s in reasonably good shape for an 88 year old document!

Price:  $10.00 (plus 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course!)

Last year we posted extensively that it would be free to a family member/descendant of Lawrence Worden (the student) or Philip Sugg (teacher) or R G Oakes (the Superintendent of Schools), but had no takers.  Since I’m a full-time social worker in addition to running this business by myself since my husband died, I really didn’t have time to search any further than I did.

Maine Folk Art – Lion Cub on Board

I just adore this little lion cub painted by a Maine woman on a rough board… she was downsizing and moving to Florida and just didn’t have enough room to take it with her. (She did hesitate at first but ultimately decided to part with the piece.)  The second photo shows her signature, which is on the bottom right, below the cub’s butt.

Condition:   An excellent original piece of Maine folk art.  The hanger on the back does needs a small nail.

Price:  Just $12.00 at Heritage Collectibles.  Plus the standard 5.5% sales tax, of course!

SOLD! Vintage Fireplace Screens – Seriously Inexpensive – Two Left

We now have just 2 different sized fireplace screens – the large one is at our shop in Lewiston (189 Main Street); one of the smaller ones sold at our booth at the Hathaway Mill Antique Mall in Waterville, although I’m not sure which one it was.

Condition:  Very good.  The detailing on the largest one has separated in one area but otherwise they’re in great shape.

Price:  Just $8.00 each.  Plus the standard 5.5% sales tax, of course!

Please note: The shop will be closed for about a month beginning in late August 2017 (dates still to be determined), while Linda visits her daughter and son-in-law for the birth of her first biological grandchild!  Prices on many items are being reduced prior to that time, to help get the shop cleared and organized, and ready for new inventory when Linda returns – in time for the holiday season.

Some Quick Details:

  • Prices Are Firm.  We do not negotiate on the prices listed in our blogs… they’re set based on what the item cost us and our expenses in running the shop.
  • Sales. We do occasionally have sales or reduce the prices on an item (usually if the item has been in the shop for at least 6 months with plenty of marketing).  If so, that reduced price will be posted.
  • Holding Items.  Sorry, not without payment.  We used to when we first opened the shops, and found that too often the person asking us to hold an item never came back and we lost sales in the interim to someone who was standing there with cash in hand. Obviously, that’s not good business.
  • Questions.  This is tough… I’d like to be responsive to everyone who has questions, but I work full time as a social worker, and full time at this shop hoping that someday it will make enough money so I can retire from that social work job.  This means I have very limited time to respond to questions, especially if those questions have already been answered in this blog or on our various posts.  So I may not have time to respond…
  • Dealers. We’re happy to talk to you!  Please remember to bring a copy of your State Resellers License.

SOLD! Vintage Avor Glass Candy Container – Los Angeles Blimp

Wow!  Take a look at this!  It’s a Vintage Avor Glass Candy Container – Los Angeles Blimp!  (Or maybe it was supposed to be a zeppelin?)  Some, like this one, were painted.

I’m not savvy on the differences between blimps, dirigibles, air ships and zeppelins – those were my husband’s forte.  Either way, he would have gotten a kick out of this.  And some of these have gone for a whole lot more than the price we have on it.

Condition:   Really good shape for its age.

Price:  Just $45.00 at Heritage Collectibles.  Plus the standard 5.5% sales tax, of course!

SOLD! Vintage Deezil Model Airplane Engine!

This was a nice find!  It’s a vintage Deezil “A” .125 – a diesel model airplane engine.

I don’t know anything about this; my husband would have though.. and he would have been thrilled to have gotten his hands on it!

Condition:   It seems to be in good condition except for the broken propeller.

Price:  Just $40.00 at Heritage Collectibles.  Plus the standard 5.5% sales tax, of course!

SOLD! Camp or Starter Apartment Hutch / Entertainment Center or Use It in the Garage!

This is one of those particle board entertainment centers – or maybe it’s a small hutch.  In any event, it’s been used and is somewhat scratched up but it’s fine for a camp or starter piece.  And it’s on wheels, which makes moving it a breeze!  (The wheels alone are probably worth the $10.00 price tag.)

Dimensions:  47″H x 25″W x 20″D (the top surface is 16″D).

Condition:  It’s in fair condition… it’s obviously been well used, as the pictures show.  And there is a section where water was apparently spilled on it; since it’s particle board, that area is kind of bubbled up.

Price:  Just $10.00 at Heritage Collectibles.

This, however is actually made of wood.  That means that if you’re looking for a great project piece, this is it!

Dimensions:  25″H x 23″W x 27″D (the top surface is 14″D).

Condition:  It’s in good condition… it’s obviously been well used, as the pictures show.

In memory of my beloved husband John K Snyder… 20 Sept 1956 – 21 Oct 2016.
He loved our shops, especially Heritage Books, Maps & Ephemera – it was his baby.

He loved me, and oh how I loved him.

Follow our blog at https://warrior-project.org, in honor of my husband, and all others who have been lost to internal demons that in the end, overwhelmed them.

All of the profits after expenses from Heritage Collectibles, Books & Maps and Papa’s Thrift Shop will go to help fund The Warrior Project, a suicide prevention drop-in and counseling center in the process of being developed.

(Please Note: The Warrior Project is in no way intended to be reflective of, or piggy back off, Wounded Warriors which serves those military personnel wounded after September 11, 20o1.  Like too many others, John was a warrior long before then.)
