SOLD! Entwined Lovers – High Relief Sculpture

Lovers Bas Relief 2

This would look great in a bed & breakfast or a traditional, Victorian type home or office.  Or, it would be very cool as a contrast to a sleek, modern home.  I’m not so sure how it would fit in with Mid Century Modern… what do you think?.

From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relief):

Relief is a sculptural technique where the sculpted elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material. The term relief is from the Latin verb relevo, to raise. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane.[1] What is actually performed when a relief is cut in from a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood (relief carving) is a lowering of the field, leaving the unsculpted parts seemingly raised. The technique involves considerable chiselling away of the background, which is a time-consuming exercise. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, especially in stone. In other materials such as metal, clay, plaster stucco, ceramics or papier-mache the form can be just added to or raised up from the background, and monumental bronze reliefs are made by casting.

There are different degrees of relief depending on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field, for which the Italian appellations are still sometimes used. The full range includes high relief (alto-rilievo), where more than 50% of the depth is shown and there may be undercut areas, mid-relief (mezzo-rilievo), low-relief (basso-rilievo, or French: bas-relief /ˌbɑːrɪˈliːf/), and shallow-relief or rilievo schiacciato,[2] where the plane is only very slightly lower than the sculpted elements. There is also sunk relief, which was mainly restricted to Ancient Egypt (see below). However the distinction between high relief and low relief is the clearest and most important, and these two are generally the only terms used to discuss most work.

Kind of an Odd Little “Kittens with Banjo” Folk Art

106

Okay, so I seriously had no idea that cats & banjos were such a popular combination.  (And I most definitely do not remember the 1978 Little Friskies cat with banjo commercial, although I was already an adult at that time.)

It was quite surprising when I tried to research this apparently original piece to see if it was copied from a famous (or obscure) piece I knew nothing about… what I found were dozens upon dozens of cat-with-banjo drawings, depictions and so forth.  What I did not find was this one.

I also have no clue what’s going on with the back of this funny little piece that I picked up at an auction a while ago.  It looks like someone let his or her kid use the reverse of the heavy cardboard/canvas for messing around.

In any event, it’s all just very cool, for some reason.  If anyone has any ideas or information on its history, please let us know!

107

Condition: The artwork itself is in pretty good condition.  It’s been in storage for quite a while now, and the art has separated from the wood frame, which is a boring plain white.  The separation occurred because it was being held in place by some dried out masking tape that just … well, dried out completely.   (It’s almost as if the artist did it that way on purpose so the back would be visible whenever someone wanted to take a look.  But that’s just a guess.)  Otherwise, it’s not in bad condition at all.  I just love this piece.

Dimensions:   20 3/4″ H x 15 1/2″ W.

Price:  $44.00 plus Maine sales tax of $2.42 for a total of $46.42.

SOLD! Untitled (?) – Baby Seal by Maine Artist Carolyn Folsom, 1980

Art - Baby Seal 2 Art - Baby Seal

I wasn’t able to find much about Carolyn Folsom via a quick internet search, although she appears to be well-known in the Bangor area.

Here’s what little I did find: she spent her childhood in Northern Maine in the 1930s and 1940s, she apparently lived in Millinocket at the end of WW II, she taught art, and she was/is married to Clyde Folsom, a storyteller.

This pencil drawing of a baby seal is just lovely and totally sweet, and is signed by the artist and dated 1980. The matting is well done, as is the frame, although the latter has suffered some minor dings over the decades.

Like some other items being posted, this was in storage after our bricks and mortar shop closed, and is just now being displayed again.

Condition:  Excellent although the frame has some minor dings.

Dimensions: about 26″W x 22.5″H

Price:  $75.00.  Maine State Sales Tax of 5.5% applies

Interesting Vintage/Antique Wooden Box

box-curved box-curved-9

Neither my late husband nor I could figure out what this box was designed for, but it was clearly intended as a quality piece… look at all the curved and rounded edges, and the solid handles!  It’s very well made.

It also appears to not have ever had a cover (because of the rounded edges).

If you can identify what this box was intended for, we’d love to hear about it!

It’s been in storage for quite a while, but now it’s time for someone else who will love its unique-nesses to take it home!

Condition:  Very solid, and in great shape for its age, whatever that may be!

Dimensions:  About 15″H x 18″W x 18″D.

Price:  $20.00   Plus the expected 5.5% State of Maine Sales Tax, of course.

SOLD! Update: MCM Kidney-Shaped Desk and Chair – Apparently It Really Was a Vanity – Best for a Small Person or Youngster

This is a great little Mid Century Modern (1950s era) kidney-shaped desk and matching chair by Aristo-Bilt.   Or at least, I thought it was a desk, based on previous research.

In that research, I only found one item by this company on Worthpoint (the antique sellers’ “bible”), and none on eBay, although when one does a Google search, many of their other MCM items pop up.  (I do have another kidney-shaped vanity with matching mirror although there’s no manufacturer’s trade mark or other identifying information.  You’ll find that one on another post).

Several people have messaged to tell me this was a vanity, not a desk, because of the wings that come out, to hold the skirt that was draped around it.  I’ve found it this listed as a desk in several places, and since it appears there’s never been a mirror attached, I decided it had to be a desk.

However, a little more research taught me something:  There are small nail holes all around the perimeter of the desk, which indicate that a skirt was attached there.  So this was originally a vanity, despite what I’ve seen on-line.  (The “wings” would hold the skirt open so you could easily get at the drawers.)

Condition:  PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY, AS WELL AS THE DIMENSIONS BELOW.  The piece is in pretty good shape but in addition to needing a good sanding, it also needs a decent regluing, especially the matching chair.   It’s not as sturdy as I originally thought. (Leaning on both the desk and the chair showed they need some tightening and wood glue.)  Otherwise, the condition of the two pieces is very good, although it needs to be sanded because of the water stain (and some other less obvious ones) shown in the photos.

This set would perk right up and be totally adorable if properly stained or even painted.  And if you were to put a skirt around the vanity, it would make you – or perhaps a youngster – feel marvelous!

Dimensions:  PLEASE READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY, AS WELL AS THE CONDITION ABOVE.  The desk is 34″ W x 17″ D x 30″ H.  The knee room is about 21″ H x 23″ W.  It’s much smaller/lower than desks nowadays.  (Were people shorter in the 50s?  My dad and one of his brothers were both about 6′ tall, so it seems unlikely… but then, the women in the family tend to be 5’4″ and under… so who knows!)  If you are an average-sized individual, you may find it’s just too small for your purposes.

Price:  REDUCED because of the issues pointed out above.  Was $155.00.  Now, $125.00.  Plus 5.5% Maine State Sales tax, of course.  Purchase both this vanity and our other one (search this website for “Vanity”) for just $195.00.

Shipping & Delivery:  Please see the tabs above.
