Primitive Garden Gnome

Garden Gnome

Take a look at this guy!  He’s about 3 feet tall and is made of a combination of wood, steel & tin.  He’s pretty weathered – although in excellent shape – so he had been hanging out on someone’s lawn or garden for a while.  I picked him up at an estate sale along the coast of Maine.

According to Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_gnome), a garden or lawn gnome “is a figurine of a small humanoid creature, usually wearing a pointy hat, displayed for the purpose of ornamentation on front lawns or in gardens.  These figurines originated in 19th-century Germany, where they became known as Gartenzwerge (garden dwarfs). The application of the term gnome in English is first attested in the 1930s.”

My photos don’t really do him justice, and at nearly 3 feet high, he’s bigger than he looks!

Price:  $85.00

Old Fashioned Ice Cube Trays

Old Fashioned Ice Cube Tray - The Very Best Kind!

Old Fashioned Ice Cube Tray – The Very Best Kind!

There’s nothing like the old fashioned metal ice cube trays.

The new, cheap plastic ones are awful.  The ice cubes don’t pop out easily, and the plastic breaks.  I haven’t found any of the plastic ones that are worth the money I’ve paid for them.  So for quite some time now, I’ve been telling myself that the first chance I got, I would go on a search for the kind I remember from years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at a garage sale with friends when … holy cow!  METAL ICE CUBE TRAYS!

Not just one, or two.. but FIVE of them!  Scooping them up, I told my friends that I didn’t care how much they cost, they were MINE!

Guess the guy running the garage sale overheard me because he charged me $10.00… and frankly, my dear… I didn’t give a damn.  Those metal ice cube trays with the handle that pops up and loosens the cubes, those great big giant ice cubes, the size they’re meant to be… they were mine.

You can have your plastic trays.  I’ll take the old-fashioned kind any day.

GONE! Antique Horse Collar Stuffed with Straw

Antique Horse Collar Stuffed with Straw. This lovely antique horse collar stuffed with straw is quite in good shape considering the age & measures 24"h x 17"l! This would look great hanging on any wall.

Antique Horse Collar Stuffed with Straw. This lovely antique horse collar stuffed with straw is quite in good shape considering the age & measures 24″h x 17″l! This would look great hanging on any wall.

UPDATE:  Unfortunately, this was in such bad shape that it didn’t survive a couple of moves, and I reluctantly ended up trashing it.

This antique horse collar stuffed with straw arrived in rather more distressed condition than we had planned on, and as a result, we really don’t think we can sell it for what we’d expected, based on the description from the auction house out west.

It’s another of those cases of our loss is your gain!  The collar cost us far more than what we’re selling it for.

Condition:  It’s pretty rough.

Price: Now just $10.00!  (The most recent price was $25.00, although I believe we started out even higher than that… which was still a loss for us.) Plus Maine State Sales Tax of 5.5%.

Location:  This item can be found at the Undercover Antique Mall, Route 26 in Oxford ME.

NOTE: Now that we’ve downsized at our main location, our new entrance is at the back of the building!  You’ll see some signs in the windows saying “Heritage Collectibles”, “Retail Shop” and “Welcome”!   Our “Open” flag will be out, if we’re at the shop!

State of Maine Souvenir Ribbon Plate – And a Great History Lesson!

State of Maine Souvenir Ribbon Plate

State of Maine Souvenir Ribbon Plate

State of Maine Souvenir Ribbon Plate

State of Maine Souvenir Ribbon Plate

This lovely little souvenir map of Maine (8″ in diameter, excluding the points of the reticulation) is what was once called a ribbon plate, as one could thread ribbon in and out among the openings.

Ribbon plates were most popular from the late 1800s through early 1900s, and according to one source (http://www.lockside-antiques.co.uk/Ribbon_plates.html): “Many of the plates from the turn of the 20th century had the inscription ‘A Present from’ followed by the place name.

The variety within this range is amazing and has revealed place names which one would never consider a commercial proposition. They must have had a special meaning at the time or they would never have been produced. Research often reveals an historical surprise.”

This plate is labeled “Made in Japan” on the reverse.  Because of a variety of laws passed by customs (with WWII having an impact on those laws), the plate is likely to have been made during 1921-1939, or after 1952.

Given the popularity of ribbon plates through about 1920 or so, it seems possible that this one is from the earlier period, or nearly 100 years old. There’s more to suggest that this plate is from the early 1900s…

For example, the town of Skowhegan is highlighted, but the much larger towns of Lewiston-Auburn aren’t on the map at all!  Old Orchard Beach and its pier are pinpointed (the original pier opened in 1898) – although both that town and Portland are misplaced on the map as being north of Brunswick.

Further, the plate highlights “Casco Castle” which was built in South Freeport in 1903.

Age & Condition:  So… it seems we have a 90+ year old plate – and it’s in pristine condition… no chips, cracks or other blemishes.

Price: $28.00.  Plus 5.5% Maine State sales tax.

Edith Piaf – Mood Music

piafad

We are open!  Come on in and browse while I’m listening to Edith Piaf and similar artists (via Pandora radio)!  Believe it or not, Pandora included a Mama Cass favorite – Dream a Little Dream of Me – in the mix.  Other great musicians featured today have included Louis Armstrong, Fred Astaire and Ella… they must have read my mind.  Hopefully we’ll get a little Jimmy Durante, as well!  (I’m usually stuck behind the desk doing paperwork while at the shop – gotta love the ability to listen to the greats while dealing with spreadsheets!)

As you can imagine, the music is amazing!

We do plan to close at 5:00 this afternoon, or maybe 6:00 or 7:00, depending on our mood.

Tomorrow, July 4th, we’ll be open from about 11:00-8:00 pm. After that, we’ll have to get home because one of our dogs doesn’t do well with fireworks.  (The shop and home are about equidistant from the Liberty Festival, although in opposite directions.)

Message re Our Products:
Most of the items we offer are vintage, antique or simply pre-owned.  Therefore, reasonable wear & tear is to be expected, and our items are sold as seen and as described in the photos and/or in person.
We try to describe any damage, nicks, blemishes or other problems of which we are aware in any and all of our listings, and always include plenty of clear photographs which are integral to the description, so please review them closely.
Also, please be aware that vintage and antique items are unlikely to be in factory condition, so if you aren’t used to buying antique or vintage items – and are in fact looking for a pristine, unused item – a new reproduction may be better suited for you.
We ordinarily do not “clean up” items because such cleaning may detract from their value.
We are specific and honest in our descriptions because we want happy buyers who will return and/or refer their friends!
