Antique Flemish Art Pyrography Bulldog Towel Rack

Take a look at this vintage towel rack depicting three bulldogs.  You can see the curved bar in the photo above, which I originally couldn’t see until I actually checked the piece in person. The inscription on the bar reads “English Beauties”.

It’s made of plywood, which I initially thought meant it wasn’t as old as the inscription reads, but a very quick internet search gave the following information: “The technique has been around for a long time – as early as 2600 BC in ancient Egypt – but it was not until the 1850s that plywood started to be used on an industrial scale”.

Also according to an internet search, “Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning”.

My experience before now with pyrography – or wood burning as we knew it back in the mid 1960s – wasn’t a pleasant one. I was 9 or 10 years old and in the 4th grade. Our teacher brought in a wood burning set one day and made it clear that if anyone hurt himself or herself, she’d take it home and never bring it back.

Well, I’ve always been a klutz, and of course, I cut myself, badly enough that I still have a scar over 50 years later.

No way was I going to let the teacher or anyone know, but my finger was bleeding like crazy, and I had no tissues or anything to contain the flow. All I had were some school papers and wax paper from my lunch. So I kept my hand inside my desk, with wax paper wrapped around that finger (which only served to smear the mess). But by golly, I managed somehow.

I don’t really remember any more about the incident, and have no idea if the teacher ever figured it out, but it does seem that she didn’t bring the woodburning set back to class again.

In any event, I have great respect for anyone who can not only use such tools without wounding himself, but who can actually create something of beauty!

Dimensions:  About 13″ wide by 7″ high by about 2 1/2″ deep.  With the chain, it’s just under 14″ long.

Condition:   Excellent antique condition.  The inscription on the reverse dates the piece back to 1910 (apparently it originally said 1912,  but was overwritten to say 1910).  The wording is “To Fred Berg, 1910 by Florence. To Frederick Anderson”.

Price:
$48.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales tax of $2.64 for a total of $50.64.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

SOLD! Amazing Antique Concrete Gargoyle / Foo Dog Found In an Old Vermont Farmhouse! – From Our Wild Heart Gallery

Wow! Take a look at this guy! I don’t think I’ve been as excited about an auction find as I have been with this one. Look at the detail!

Gargoyles were traditionally thought to fight off evil, and to protect your house and garden; they would stand guard to ward off unwanted spirits and other creatures.

So, were they considered good? Or evil? According to one source in a Google search, because they were thought to ward off evil, “they served as almost an ‘evil eye’ – they were evil-looking creatures that were designed to keep evil at bay”.

I have no idea how old he is, but he is definitely old… not only is he MUCH heavier at 14+ pounds than the usual new stuff, but take a look at the red paint – and it’s still in pretty good shape!

A search of the internet only found one other like this guy, which was sold back in 2008. The seller of that gargoyle thought maybe he represented a Foo Dog, and he was definitely correct in that assessment, although it appears (from the single photo) that his piece had lost all of its paint, probably from being outside in the elements for so long.

Foo dogs usually come in pairs – a male and a female. The male has a ball under its paw, while the female typically has a puppy. This would be a male… unfortunately, the female is among the missing. And the one that sold 12 years ago was also a male. So there are two female Foo Dogs (actually, they’re lions, not dogs) out there somewhere. I hope they haven’t been lost or destroyed, because I’d love to find this guy’s mate.

In any event, he is just wonderful, and right now is guarding the entrance to my office until he finds a new home and family to take care of.

Note: Items in our Wild Heart Gallery will soon also be published on their own website, Wild Heart dot Gallery.

Dimensions:   He is 10.5″H x 8″D x 5″W, and weighs just over 14 pounds.

Condition:   Given his apparent age and time spent in the weather guarding the farmhouse he was found in, he is in absolutely great condition.

Price:
$90.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $4.95 for a total of $94.95.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Location & Purchasing: This piece is located in our display case (#27) at Cabot Mill Antiques, Fort Andross, 14 Maine Street, Brunswick ME. You can purchase directly through them by visiting that beautiful shop, 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (7:00 pm on Fridays).

Sold! 5 Large Wooden Maine Clam Baskets

Wow… Maine clam baskets go for a lot of money on eBay… but we aren’t planning to price ours that high, even though they’re larger than some and very well made!

The wood is probably pine, with that bleached blonde color. These would be great as gifts, and if you’re at all artsy, you would have great fun staining and/or painting them.

Dimensions:  13.5″W x 13.5″H x 10.5″D.  They measure 7.5″H to the top of the basket.

Condition:   Excellent.  Like new.  No design flaws noted.

Price:

Each is $14.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $.83, for a total of $15.83.
All 5 for $60.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $2.64, for a total of $50.64.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Possible Delivery Options in the Next Week

Because we sometimes travel throughout Maine and New Hampshire to pick up new inventory, we thought perhaps our customers would like to know if we plan to be near their area at any time, in order to deliver heavier or more fragile items for less than a shipping company might charge.

So here’s a quick overview of some upcoming travel. We’ll try to stay on top of this in case it’s helpful for you!

On Sunday, January 3, 2021, we will be traveling to Old Town (ME) from Lewiston-Auburn (ME), leaving here at 8:30 am and arriving up there by 10:45 am. We can deliver within a mile along the route for $15.00 that morning, or further off the route for $1.98 per mile.  There will not be room in the Jeep to deliver on our return back late that afternoon.

On Monday, January 4, we will be traveling to Concord (NH) from Lewiston-Auburn (ME), leaving here around 6:00 am, and arriving there by 8:00 am. We can deliver within a mile along that route for $15.00 (or further off that route for $1.98 per mile), either before 8:00 am, or after we leave Concord at about 8:30.  We have to be back in Lewiston-Auburn no later than 11:00, so please take that into account.

On Thursday, January 7, we MAY be traveling to Pemaquid Point (ME) from Lewiston-Auburn (ME), leaving here around 11:30 am, and arriving there at around 1:00 pm after dropping off a purchase to a customer (in either Sabattus or Lisbon, location to be determined) along the way. We can deliver within a mile along that route for $15.00 (or further off that route for $1.98 per mile), either before 1:00, or after we leave Pemaquid, which would probably be around 2:00 pm. We won’t know until after 8:00 pm, Tuesday, January 5, whether we will be making the trip.

On Saturday, January 9, we expect to be traveling to Bridgton (ME) at some point during the day, leaving from Lewiston-Auburn (ME). As always, we ca deliver within a mile along that route for $15.00 (or further off the route for $1.98 per mile).

It is also possible that we will be traveling back to Old Town (ME) on either Saturday, January 9 or Sunday, January 10, leaving from Lewiston-Auburn (ME). As above, we can deliver within a mile along that route for $15.00 (or further off the route for $1.98 per mile). We will not know until after about 5:00 on Sunday, January 3 whether we will be making that trip, or if we do, what time that will be.

Please Note: If we do have to deviate from our planned route i.e. by driving 10 miles out of our way, it would require adjusting our time schedule somewhat, meaning we’d have to leave earlier in order to still arrive at our destination on time.

Any and all items plus delivery charges must be paid for in advance.

SOLD! 7 Drawer Lingerie Dresser in Country Blue

I just adore this lingerie dresser, and would buy it off Heritage Collectibles myself, if I didn’t already have too much furniture!  (There’s still a possibility that I will; I’m thinking it would be great if the drawers were each lined in velvet – it would make a wonderful jewelry chest!)

It’s wood construction with a particle board back, like most inexpensive furniture nowadays.

Dimensions:  45″H x 18″W x 12″D

Condition:   Structurally and visually the dresser is in excellent condition with the exception some minor dings and scratches here and there as seen in the photos.

Price:
$85.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $4.68 for a total of $89.68.  Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:
Shipping this item is not recommended because the cost to value ratio would be prohibitive.  We can deliver within Lewiston-Auburn for a $15.00 delivery fee, or Gray/Portland (along the 202 Route, or just off it) early Wednesday mornings for the same $15.00.

SOLD! Pine Country Jelly Cabinet

What a nice little, 6-shelf, pine jelly cabinet!  It’s wood through and through, as you can see from the photos (particularly the back view).

The shelves are stationary.

Dimensions:  46″H x 15″W x 9″D

Condition:   Structurally and visually the cabinet is in excellent condition with the exception of an area on the bottom right hand, that appears to be paper that stuck to the wood (possibly from jelly?).  I haven’t had a chance to see if it can be easily removed, but will soon.

Price:
$50.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $2.75 for a total of $52.75.

Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:

“Chums” – Boy with Blonde Curls and His Puppy, print by Jane Freeman

Sometimes it’s a bit frustrating to gather information on a piece of artwork.

The boy’s blonde curls and his puppy’s perked up ears make a great combination suggesting innocence and sweetness!  Who wouldn’t love to hang this anywhere in your home?

I do have to admit, however, that sometimes it’s a bit frustrating to gather good information on a piece of artwork.

After trying several combinations of search terms, I finally found the name of the artist on eBay (!), and from there was able to glean more about this watercolor print.

The artist, Jane Freeman, was born in England in 1871 and died on September 23, 1963. She was a well-known portrait artist who painted Albert Schweitzer and Mother Cabrini.

This particular piece has been identified by several different names, the most common of which is “Chums”, referring to the relationship between the boy and his dog.  There’s another of a young girl and her cat, which is often paired with this one.

I love this innocence that comes across in this lovely print.

Dimensions: 17.5″ W x 21″ H.

Condition:   The wood frame is in excellent condition, as is the print.   The backing seems to have been replaced at some point, as it’s been taped in place.  The print is somewhat loose in the frame.

Price:  $25.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $1.38 for a total of $26.38. Unless we’re having a sale, which would be listed here, our prices are firm.

Shipping & Delivery:

SOLD! REDUCED! Pretty Cream Rug with Pinkish Accent – Now Just $24.00.

We got this rug through an estate auction, going only by the description, which stated: “The maker is unknown. There is slight discoloration that may come out with a steam clean. Otherwise, it is in great vintage condition.”

It’s been rolled up and in storage since picking it up the first of August (and likely was rolled a bit longer than that) as I haven’t had a chance to spread it out and take a look until just now.

Condition:   The rug itself is indeed in great condition with no pulls or snags.  It does, however, have the discolorations shown in the photos.  As the estate sale company stated, those can probably come out with a good steam cleaning.  However, due to the unknowns regarding the discolorations, the price has been adjusted to take them into account.

Dimensions:   72″W x 107″ L

Price:  REDUCED!  Was $48.00; now just $24.00, plus 5.5% Maine State Sales Tax of $1.32 for a total of $25.32.
