Tom Swift & His Ocean Airport, first edition

First Edition, 1934. I can't wait to read this, nor can my husband!

First Edition, 1934. I can’t wait to read this, nor can my husband!

Subject / Topic:  According to http://www.tomswift.info/homepage/oceanair.html :

“Summary: No official summary was ever provided with any of the old Tom Swift books. However, the plot can be summed up as follows:

“A friend of Tom Swift’s was thought to have been murdered over the Atlantic Ocean in an attempt at circling the globe. Tom, partly in memorial and partly because of a need, decides to build a large floating airport out in the middle of the ocean.

“To build such an airport requires a very special kind of wood. This wood, called talcap, is imported from the mythical country of Haargoland. There is some trouble getting the wood, but at last Tom gets his wood, figures everything is all right, and goes out to sea to build his airport.

“After the airport is built, however, the Haargoland navy shows up and claims the airport for Haargoland, claiming that Tom had no right to take the wood in the first place. Tom then is forced to use his new “soundless wireless” to contact the U. S. Government, which promptly dispatches a large plane and a Navy vessel to the scene.

“The Navy vessel, arriving first, promptly forces the Haargolanders to surrender. Before the United States government can take official responsibility for the airbase, however, certain ceremonies have to take place; the men who have to perform these ceremonies are on board the airplane, which gets trapped in a tremendous mid-Atlantic storm.

“Can Tom Swift’s Ocean Airport stand this ultimate test and save the planeload of diplomats? His Ocean Airport faces its ultimate test!”

Repurposed End Table – Now A Game Board Center

Here's another idea for repurposing an old side table - the internet is a wealth of ideas!

Here’s another idea for repurposing an old side table – the internet is a wealth of ideas!

Recently I posted an idea for changing a vintage end table into a Lego (R) play center, based on pictures I found on-line.  Here’s another idea for that same end table!

Repurposing an Old Side Table

Repurposed Side Tables

We picked up two very solid, but pretty well used side tables at an auction last week.  It would be a shame to turn them into firewood…

The ideas are endless... take that solid but ugly old side table, and make something special just for you!

Auction Fun!

Have purchased all sorts of cool stuff at an auction tonight – and missed some items I really wanted, too.

Tomorrow I should have photos of a wonderful black concrete horse hitching post, a very weathered fence post with metal bird affixed, great old art (including one vintage nude), a first edition Tom Swift, and much more!

SOLD! “If”, by Kipling – My Favorite Poem Ever

If, by Rudyard Kipling. My absolutely favoritest poem ever.

If, by Rudyard Kipling. My absolutely favoritest poem ever.

I recently bought a box lot of old frames and pictures at an auction, sight unseen.

Inside was this depiction of my favorite poem ever… “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

My day job is as a social worker, and I’ve taught anger management classes for decades, both to adults and kids in the programs I’ve worked at, and at adult education classes.  I always always always repeat this poem to the clients I work with, even if I know their eyes will glaze over in boredom.  The concept is so powerful, and the words are so beautiful, they fill me with awe every time I read them.

This little framed depiction (just 7.5″ x 11.5″) is so beautifully done, I don’t know if I can bear to part with it… My photos do not do it justice.

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on”;

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man my son!

Rudyard Kipling, published in 1910.

If 2 If 3 If 4

Three Passions – Bertrand Russell

From The Bertrand Russell Society, http://www.users.drew.edu/~jlenz/brs.html

From The Bertrand Russell Society, http://www.users.drew.edu/~jlenz/brs.html

The Prologue to Bertrand Russell’s Autobiography

What I Have Lived For

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy – ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness–that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what–at last–I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) won the Nobel prize for literature for his History of Western Philosophy and was the co-author of Principia Mathematica.

$75 Gift Card Drawings – Winner Updates

Misc Items

Well, we don’t know for sure what happened but it seems our first gift card winner never received the notification that he had won a $75.00 gift certificate to Heritage Collectibles! We’ve emailed him three times, with no response (including a request that he acknowledge the email so we’d know if he got it or not), but haven’t heard back.

So we’ll be drawing another winner later today.

In the meantime, we’ve also emailed the winners of the other two drawings we’ve had this spring, and are waiting to hear back from them.  If those emails don’t get through, we’ll choose other winners.  (This time I won’t announce the winners until they get back to me!)

We deliberately don’t ask for phone numbers because many people have expressed concerns about getting multiple calls for timeshares and so forth.  (It even happened to me this spring when I put my name in for a drawing at one of the shows we exhibited at!)  We do make it clear that we will email the winners; unfortunately, we also know that people change email addresses frequently, or misspell their address, or whatever, and sometimes that means they miss out.  (We’re really really sorry… but we do want to honor our commitment and award those gift certificates!)

Congratulations to the winners… hope to see you soon!

Western Gear, Art or Other? What Do You Think?

spaghetti-western-heroes

A week ago, a customer came into Heritage Collectibles looking for “western” items… spurs, wagon wheels, etc.  While we don’t currently carry much that could be considered “western”, she did buy an autographed photo of The Cisco Kid (surely you remember The Cisco Kid!).

Autographed Photo of The Cisco Kid (SOLD)

Autographed Photo of The Cisco Kid (SOLD)

If we were to add western items to the shop, would you be interested?  If so, what would you like to see?  (We do have a couple of sombreros next door at Papa’s Thrift Shop, and two antique wooden stirrups at Cabot Mill Antiques in Brunswick.)

Let me know!
