Child with Cherries, by Bouguereau – 1896
Someone just walked into the shop with the print above, “Child with Cherries” by Bouguereau, dated 1896.
“Can you tell me what it’s worth?” he asks.
I can try… let me see.
There’s no sense in looking these things up on eBay, since eBay prices are what the seller is hoping to get, and don’t reflect actual sold prices.
We subscribe to services that tell us what items actually have sold for, which helps us immensely in pricing our inventory – there’s no way we could know even a smidgen of everything that’s out there.
I looked it up for the gentleman, and found only 7 copies of Child with Cherries has sold (via public auction or other tracking mechanism) since 2010. That first one went for $100.00. Cool!
Another went for $45.00. Not quite so exciting.
The remaining 5 all sold for between $12.34 and $25.00. And two of those had really nice frames, unlike the plain Jane one he was holding. Sigh… sorry, sir. It’s not worth much at all.
“It’s okay”, he said. “I only paid $5.00 for it and am giving it to my granddaughter as a gift”.
Well, then. I was glad to tell him that he’d definitely gotten his money’s worth.

Hours: Usually 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Thursdays|Fridays|Saturdays and occasionally 12:00 noon to 5:oo pm on Sundays. We’re also often open until 7:00 pm on Fridays.

Also, please be aware that vintage and antique items are unlikely to be in factory condition, so if you aren’t used to buying antique or vintage items – and are in fact looking for a pristine, unused item – a new reproduction may be better suited for you.
We ordinarily do not “clean up” items because such cleaning may detract from their value.
